The mission of the Graduate Program in Planning and Management of Sustainable Cities is to develop individuals with expertise in planning and managing sustainable cities, capable of contributing to the advancement of science and the evolution of society in an ethical and sustainable manner.
The program aims to develop, primarily in Brazilian cities, applied scientific research that:
a) Establishes transformative practices and solves problems observed in cities;
b) Establishes plans to prepare cities for new sustainable models;
c) Develops and disseminates new knowledge to the community; and
d) Trains master's degree professionals capable of applying the scientific method to problem solving.
The first area is Sustainability and Citizenship, which addresses aspects related to the socio-spatial formation of sustainable cities based on current and cutting-edge models for sustainable development. In this line, all 17 SDGs will be addressed in the courses, considering legal, regulatory, and economic aspects, as well as the dimensions of urban ecology, the built environment, human mobility, society and democracy, quality of life, and the study and application of management and planning tools to examine the socio-spatial formation of sustainable cities.
This line of thinking is reflected in the following subjects: Society and Democracy; Quality of Life and Citizen Engagement; Strategic Planning and Governance in Cities; Natural Resource Management and Green Infrastructure; Economic Development and Sustainability; Human Mobility and Transportation; City, Centrality, and Urban Evolution; ESG and Ethics in City and Organization Management.
The Innovation and Technology research area addresses broader transformations in contemporary cities through the study and application of methods in artificial intelligence and computer science; the functions and applications of smart technologies; and technological and social innovation ecosystems to explore the possibilities and impacts of sustainable city projects. The dimensions of this line of research are Digital Transformation accelerated by networks, connectivity, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things; social and technological innovation in cities promoted by innovation ecosystems; and the relationship between technology and innovation and the formation of citizenship through education and learning.
This line includes the subjects of Learning and Knowledge in Innovation Management in Cities; Innovation Ecosystems for Sustainability in Urban Centers; Digital Economy and Emerging Technologies; Artificial Intelligence and Education for Sustainability; Indicator Management Models in Cities: Governance; Urban Equipment and Sustainable Construction; Low Carbon Systems and Renewable Energy; Big Data Analysis and Technologies for Smart Cities.
