Lines and Projects of Research

Última modificação em 25/09/2023.

The research lines of the Graduate Program in Animal Health - and the projects that derive from them - involve high school, undergraduate and graduate students. This way, they provide coexistence and constant interaction between these three levels of education, seeking to include, whenever possible, the role of graduate students as co- advisors of scientific initiation scholarship holders.

With a concentration area in Animal Health, the Master's Program is structured in two lines of research:

  • Animal Clinic, surgery and reproduction;
  • Control of diseases that affect animals.

The concept of animal health covers animal diseases and the interaction between animal well-being and health, as well as human health and food safety. It is understood that professionals working in this area should seek to preserve the health of animals and prevent diseases, helping and improving the protection of public health, the environment, and the nation's economy. In addition, the growing possibilities of diagnosing diseases in Veterinary Medicine, added to the emergence of diseases, make it crucial to have an accurate vision of animal health. The Program thus aims at a vision of animal health that is directed towards the concept of "one health", training professionals who act to reduce the emerging risks of infectious diseases dissemination and cases of non-infectious diseases, resulting from the interface between animals, humans and the ecosystem found in the Northeast Region of Rio Grande do Sul State.

Lines of Research

There are two lines of research whose proposal expresses developments in the area of concentration, being directed to the interrelationships of Animal Health with the universe of organizations and independent professionals.

Animal Clinic, surgery and reproduction

Animal Clinic, surgery and reproduction are among the areas most sought after by Veterinary Medicine graduates, demonstrating a promising job market by taking up these professionals due to the great demand and challenges in the area. Thus, this line of research aims to promote the training of veterinarians - with or without an employment relationship - which will allow them to expand the field of their professional activity and increase interaction with businesses in the sector.

Control of diseases that affect animals

Sanitary improvements, with the development of new technologies, in addition to expanding access to specialized animal health services, are essential for executing the control of diseases that affect animals. However, despite advances in disease control, many diseases are still an important animal health problem within the regional context. This line of research aims to promote the training of professionals capable of understanding the social and financial needs of the region, with sufficient autonomy, knowledge, and tools capable of innovating while facing disease control challenges.
